... to the Cartography Group

Welcome

The Research Group Geoinformation in the Department of Geoinformation and Cartography at the Vienna University of Technology is dedicated to advancing research and education in Spatial Information Theory and Geographic Information Science. We are interested in virtually every aspect of data and information concerning large-scale space (and time) and its processes.

We currently focus on ontology and semantics of geographic space, category theory and its implication to spatial data processing, accuracy and precision of geographic data and its impact on computation, computational models of time-dependent geographic phenomena, and spatial optimization problems and their solution procedures.

Applications of our work are countless. Vehicle and pedestrian navigation, interoperability of geographic information technology, spatial decision support are just some examples.

We introduce students and young scholars to modern concepts of geographic/spatial information that span many disciplines such as ontology, geography, geometry, algebra, and computing. We seek this through a series of funded projects, as well as a variety of courses on geographic data acquisition, cadastral surveying and adjustment computation, spatial data modeling, spatial data communication, algorithm development and programming, geographic information systems, and spatial analysis.
